Tradition – History

They say that from slopes of Koziakas mountain the eminent doctor of antiquity Asklipios, gathered various herbs, components of his medicines. Even today, if you take a walk in his neighbouring mountainsides, you will of course find many herbs that the local gather and use for theirselves or in order to sell them.

The region seems to be inhabited since antiquity, according to the tradition, but also the various discoveries, as the traces of ancient castle and old settlement that was found in the localities Katofli, Psili Rahi, and Fteri that is found in the south-eastern side of village, to the village Kalogiroi, and is believed that they belong in the ancient city Poitnaio or Potnaio that flourished from the 5th century BC, up to the roman years. In this region of Poitnaio was found embossed column of an Ehenikian warrior of the 4th century BC, as well as statuettes, vessels coins and two tombs.

In the Turkish inventory of 1454-1455 the village is reported as feud of Trikala spahi with the name Tirna.

In 1660, Tyrna is reported between the christian settlements of region. In 1777, Kosmas Aitolos taught in Tyrna, and in residents of the around settlements.

In July 1821 it was burned with the near settlements by their Turkalbanians, that had overcome Nikolos Stornaris.

In 1858 L. Heuzey characterized the settlement a big Greek village, with big new church and school and in 1881 had 522 residents and is always considered a large village.

In 1944 the Pedagogic Tuition centre of Tyrna functioned for a four-month period, with Roza Imvrioti as a directress.
